How often do we hear it said that history repeats itself? And yet, we continue to make the same mistakes over and over. Or we allow our past mistakes to still effect our presence. Slavery, segregation, unequal rights, all have a negative impact on our society today. So. How did we get here?
The War Before The War, written by Andrew Delblanco follows the narrative of America’s biggest smear in history; slavery and the continued fight to keep slave states. With two parallel viewpoints to consider this epidemic throughout US history, the author delves into both the moral compromises and injustices made by our nation in a country that was divided in its belief of slavery and the direct outcome of slavery in America (i.e. the Compromise of 1850, FSA, etc.).
The Compromise of 1850 was apart of a package of five bills passed by Congress in 1850 that attempted to defuse tension between slave states and free states regarding certain territories acquired during the Mexican-American War. During this settlement with the territories, the Fugitive Slave Law was created. This law created a way for slave owners to gain back their escaped slaves. It required the return of slaves to their owners, even if they made it to a free state or territory at the dime of the federal government.
Delblanco takes this all a step further than timeline events, as the book looks beyond just the contradictions within the US Constitution and state laws. It examines the struggles of those trying to be freed and those who tried to aid them. This descriptive and captivating insight into what led to the Civil War is not just a great read for history buffs, but also a great read for every American to delve into the history of our country, how we faced this great injustice, and how it still effects us today.
The War Before the War focuses on the effect the Fugitive Slave Clause in the US Constitution had on American politics, economics, and culture from the Revolutionary War to the end of the Civil War. This book was an eye opening experience since it illuminated how complex the issue of slavery was for the fledgling nation. Instead of the oversimplified idea that some people thought slavery was good and others thought it was bad, the author discusses a wide range of point of views held by people all across America. Some abolitionist were not fighting to defend the African-American population but to support job opportunities for white men.

Former First Lady and Author, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side’s splendid memoir touches on a variety of issues beset by the First Black President and First Lady of the United States. Her specific burden was such: A black woman campaigning alongside the first black man to secure a Democratic major-party nomination for the presidency, she was unwavering in her support—and in her countenance—partly because she had no choice.
The jagged and derailed terrain of American politics with the added threat of American racism hanging over the Obama’s is a punishingly Herculean task. It requires an uncommon resolve. It’s not surprising that Michelle Obama would have felt overwhelmed by the unrelenting negativity hurled at her and her daughters during her husband’s campaigns and presidency. The book, as titled Becoming, offers a sometimes surprisingly intimate look at the life of the former first lady, born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson. Beginning with her childhood years and ending with reflections on the current administration, Becoming covers Obama’s transformation from a young overachiever on the South Side of Chicago to one of the most formidable political figures in recent history.
Michelle Obama had not, however, condemned the current administration wholeheartedly prior to Becoming’s release. Her rebukes of Donald Trump’s agenda begin with his suggestion that Barack Obama was not a U.S. citizen, which Michelle Obama says in the book put her family at risk. This was partly on the credence perpetuated against her husband that questioned the Obamas’ Americanness and humanity. Although the current 45th President no longer mention’s his predecessor’s being born as a US Citizen, he continues to attack Barack Obama as an excused to blame for his own incompetence. His main goal is to completely repeal all Obama’s executive actions and legacy. An area of discussion which could also lead to Donald Trump’s defeat for a second term and be on the list as a one term President.
“Becoming is still a political memoir; it functions partly to solidify Barack Obama’s legacy as a complex and multilayered milestone for the country. The book makes the case for the Obama family as definitively American, for Michelle Obama’s concerns as worries that derive from the universal anxieties of marriage and motherhood. Still, Becoming is satisfying for the quiet moments in which Mrs. Obama, the woman who supported a black man named Barack all the way to the presidency, gets to let down her hair and breathe as Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side”. quoted from HANNAH GIORGIS of the Atlantic.com.
In her memoir, a work of recollection and storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her own world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms.
In finally telling her story on Becoming, the Former First Lady is doing several things with this book. She is taking the country by the hand on an city and state tour of everyday African-American life and ambition, while recounting her rise from modest origins to the closest this country has to nobility. She’s meditating on the tensions women face in a world that speaks of gender equality but in which women still bear the greater burdens of balancing career and family, even with a forward-thinking husband like Barack Obama. And she is reminding readers that African-Americans, like any other group, experience the heartbreak of infertility, as she describes the challenges she and her husband confronted in order to become parents.
This is the reason why this book, “Becoming” has earned to be the Top Bestselling Book for 2018.

Tayari Jones on her Bestseller “An American Marriage” is still no. 1 on the Bestseller list.
7 days after her book was release, bookshelves all over run out of copies. We are ourselves had to back order from the publisher when we even thought we over bought and over stocked prior to the books street date.
I remember that week before Thanksgiving receiving a call from Frankfurt. Our founder who nowadays leave the day to day operations to us called to say that we really need to stack up with Tayari Jones upcoming book release. His usual flair on envisioning a really hot book title I guess still is one of the most accurate we can find from a book critic.
Oprah’s big book club endorsement also did a lot of push but the bottom line “An American Marriage” is a such a great compelling book. Tayari now becomes a part of the history books of writing.
Our display window usually gets visually merchandise each week but this book is left untouched at least for now.

we will slowly delete and disable our preferred books shipping methods using the United States Postal Service
The never ending issue on the inaccuracy of the USPS website tracking website had been costing us time, money as well as negative feedbacks and straining customer relations especially for new first time customers. The website’s messaging on “invalid”, “incorrect” “pre-shipment” will never get fixed. Not only the information finally gets updated until after or on the same day as the items are delivered but the buyers commonly thinks We never shipped the item. Most importantly especially on new first time buyers online they believe the information even though it’s not accurate as the agency is a reputable body of the government.
We realized attempting not to use the USPS as the most economical shipping courier will result to lesser sales on our part but then again our commitment is great customer service, experience and retention.
Nevertheless our retail selling prices will still strive to offer the best most affordable books even to limited income earners.
